The Gnat

If you have been attacked by a Gnat, you know it’s not a pleasant experience. They will buzz around your ears, eyes and even fly up your nose. You will have relief from this pesky pest for a while if you live in an area where the temperatures turn cold in the fall and winter. They simply disappear. But, when the season changes back to spring and summer they appear once again. Gnats love moisture and warmth while foraging for a food source.

Fact: Leaving food out on the counter in the kitchen is an invitation for the little pesky insect. In the house where moisture is always present, like the drain in sinks, around house plants, and soft, over-ripe fruits, are main attractions for biting and non-biting Gnats.

If you’re plagued by Gnats in the spring and summer and you don’t know how to get rid of them, try the easy suggestions here:

Fill a jar half-full of apple cider vinegar and add a few drops of dish soap. The vinegar will attract the gnats, while the dish soap makes the mixture too viscous for them to escape. Seal the jar and place it in the area of the highest gnat concentration. Another remedy is to fill a jar with vinegar, punch small holes in the lid and fasten the lid down on the jar. This will attract the Gnat, they go in through the holes and are trapped inside.

Dryer sheets are one of the unique home remedies for gnats. Studies have shown that dryer sheets can be used to repel gnats. This may be due to the compound linalool, a natural gnat repellent found in dryer sheets. Linalool has an odor the Gnat doesn’t like.

The best remedy in eradicating Gnats before they get started is to remove overly ripe fruits, keep trash cans clean and remove potted plants with moisture laden soil.

Visit your local big-box store or local farm supply center for a variety of repellents, or order from the internet. There are other possible remedies and can be researched from the internet.
