Soupy Sales, an American comedian, was a radio and television actor in the 1950s and 1960s. His comedic sketches usually ended with the trademark- pie in the face.

He was born Milton Supman. He and his 2 brothers all had nicknames. Milton was “Soupy”, brothers Marvin and Leonard were “Hambone” and “Chickenbone”. His parents obviously had “funnybones”.

His first pie to the face came in 1951 when he was hosting a children’s show in Cleveland, Ohio. It’s been estimated that he has had at least 25,000 pies in the face.

Soupy Sales was one of my favorite fun shows back in the early ’60s. In the early to mid-’50s my time was spent watching those western shows that featured Roy Rogers, Lash La Rue, Hopalong Cassidy and The Lone Ranger and Tonto. We watched on our first round screen tv. Friday nights were reserved for boxing. Back in those days, the tv reception was terrible, but we could make out the action on the tv in spite of all the screen snow.

I began wondering what happened to Soupy Sales not realizing that he was now in his 80’s. For those of you who remember Soupy Sales and his buddy, White Fang, there was a cult-like following. He died in 2009 at the age of 83.
