How often have you gazed up into the awesome spread of the sky at night? The night that is cloudless and the stars, billions and billions of stars can be seen, all glowing brightly. Here’s something to ponder…the light you see is light from the past. If a particular star is four light-years away, the light you see is from 4 years ago. Remember, The speed of light travels at 186,000 miles per second. To travel to that particular star it would take you 4 years to get there traveling at 186,000 miles per second. Now that’s a long way.
Depending where you are at the time, the visual of the night sky might not be clear. If you are in the city, the lights from the buildings and the street lights will not allow you to see any of the star-studded night sky. Personally, I am fortunate. I live in the country and there is no lighting interference. I can look up into the night sky and see the wonder of space from my point of view. The vastness of space is before my eyes and the galaxy of twinkling lights of heaven is gorgeous.
Amazing as it is, it is mind-boggling that up there is never-ending. We humans have endings. Life comes to an end, the end of the day, the end of the story…can you comprehend in space, there is no end? Can you mentally grasp the fact that there are no boundaries anywhere out beyond the billions of stars and other galaxies like the Milky Way alone contains billions of stars? The diameter of the Milky Way is estimated to be 200,000 light-years long. Again, traveling at the speed of light, it would take 200,000 years to cross that diameter.
Outer space is the expanse that exists beyond Earth. If you were floating around in that space without the presence of gravity or air, no place to plant your feet…how would you know what is up and what is down? There is no such thing as up and down in space. You are out of sight of the earth. Time does not exist in that never-ending space. Boundaries do not exist out there. Think about it.
